Are certain breeds more prone to serious bite injuries?

On Behalf of Rush Injury Law

With over 48 million people owning a dog, there are many different breeds out there. With some breeds having a more vicious appearance than others, it can pose the question of whether or not certain breeds are more prone to serious bite injuries in California. To answer this question, we’re going to take a look at some statistics.

The most dangerous dog breeds

Researchers undertook a 13-year study to identify the breeds of dogs that were responsible for fatalities in the United States between 2005 and 2017. Their study revealed that Pit Bulls were responsible for 284 deaths, equivalent to 66% of all fatalities in the study. Following the Pit Bull, the Rottweiler is responsible for 45 deaths and the German Shepherd 20 deaths. Other notable dog breeds on their top 10 list include the American Bulldog, Husky, Mastiff, Labrador Retriever, Boxer, and Doberman Pinscher.

The cost of a bite injury

Apart from their study about fatal dog breeds, the group of researchers also did a study on non-fatal deaths during 2015. They revealed that 28,000 people underwent reconstructive surgery after being physically attacked by a dog. Calculating the average cost of a dog bite-related stay at the hospital, they reported a going rate of $18,200. This has increased the need for personal injury lawyers to help victims receive the compensation they deserve for things like medical expenses.

As has been discovered, there are certain breeds that are more statistically likely to cause serious bite injuries than others. There are likely many factors to why certain breeds may be more viscous than others. Getting bit by a dog can cause serious harm and financial strain on the victim. It’s a good idea to consult a lawyer to see what recourse might be available.
